Batwoman Reading Order (Kate Kane)

Arboring a red bat insignia and wearing a red wing with long hair to stand among the many vigilantes protecting Gotham City is Batwoman.

Hidden beneath the domino mask is Katherine ‘Kate’ Kane, a wealthy socialite heiress who was inspired by Batman to use her resources to fight crime. She actually began her career as a vigilante during Batman’s absence in the aftermath of Infinite Crisis. Created by writers Greg Rucka, Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and Mark Waid, and artist Alex Ross, Batwoman first appeared in the limited series 52, revealing herself to be a lesbian Jew and Bruce Wayne’s cousin!

Like her cousin, Kate Kane’s childhood was defined by tragedy after her twin sister Beth and mother Gabi were kidnapped and killed by terrorists. She followed her father into the military and excelled at West Point, but was expelled under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell after being exposed as a lesbian. After struggling for a time, she eventually became Batwoman, building a reputation among Gotham’s vigilantes and even headlining her own television series on The CW for a short time.

Since her debut, Kate Kane has grown into the role of Batwoman, both as a member of the Batfamily and in her own solo series, in which her past has been explored and her values and differences with Batman have been tested. Gotham Academy Reading Order

Welcome to Gotham Academy, Gotham City’s most prestigious school, which counts Harvey Dent and Dick Grayson among its former students.

Like many places in Gotham, it is filled with history, dark secrets, and hidden passageways. Admittedly, not every part of Gotham City has secret passages. but still… Gotham’s most prestigious prep school also happens to be just across the road from the Arkham Asylum. 

It is not that difficult to imagine that life at Gotham Academy is anything but normal. In 2014, Becky Cloonan, Brendan Fletcher, and Karl Kerschl decided to explore the lives of the students attending the famous school, particularly the special case of Olive Silverlock, her best friend Mia “Maps” Mizoguchi, and the rest of the Gotham Academy Detective Club.

Batman All In Reading Order

During the Absolute Power event, Amanda Waller tried and ultimately failed to neutralize the superhero community and the wider metahuman population. In fact, this prompted the formation of a new and improved Justice League, featuring the largest roster ever. The heroes are All In the JL, while the Absolute Universe, a parallel reality shaped by Darkseid that redefines familiar characters and power structures across the DC multiverse, is created. 

With the Batman titles, the transition from the Dawn of DC era to All In is not marked by a big break. With delays in the publication of Hush 2, the direct sequel to the classic Hush story, written by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee, Chip Zdarsky’s run on Batman was slightly extended, and, eventually, Matt Fraction took over Batman (Jorge Jiménez is still the artist on the book). Detective Comics is now written by Tom Taylor with art by Pete Woods. And while Batman is not dominating the DC Universe as he once did, Superman has been pushed forward recently, there are still a lot of Bat-Family adventures to read.

Of course, there is also the popular Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, which reinvented Bruce Wayne’s life, creating a working-class version of the character who confronts crime with limited resources. This universe has a dedicated reading guide.

Best Batman and Catwoman Comics, Your Essential BatCat Reading Order

With Valentine’s Day upon us, romance is in the air! To celebrate, Comic Book Treasury has chosen to focus on one of the most iconic relationships in comic book history: Batman and Catwoman. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, the Bat and the Cat first met in Batman #1 in spring 1940. Introduced as a mysterious burglar and jewel thief, Catwoman was conceived to appeal to female readers and add sex appeal. She was introduced as a friendly foe, a member of his rogue’s gallery, and a potential love interest.

This was the start of what would become a complex love-hate relationship that has been explored and put through many challenges, including deaths and other perils such as the end of the DC Universe!

Today, the spotlight is on the couple as the stars of our Essential Reading Order. This selection of comics is the perfect way to understand their cat-and-mouse relationship, which is filled with attraction and conflict, flirtation and moral ambiguity.

The Batgirls: A Comic Guide to Gotham’s Heroines of the Night

Batgirls DC Reading Order

Batgirl. One of the most quintessential allies of Batman. Created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff, the initial incarnation of the character first appeared in Batman #139 (April 1961), presented as a female counterpart to our famous superhero. Under the costume at the time was Betty Kane, the niece of Kathy Kane (aka Batwoman), but the character simply disappeared in 1964. Batgirl was reintroduced in 1967, with Barbara Gordon under the mask, destined to become the more iconic Batgirl.

Batgirl is a crime fighter in Gotham City who regularly appeared in Detective Comics, Batman Family and several other DC books until 1988. However, Barbara Gordon decided to retire from crime-fighting before her whole life was transformed by the Joker. This event altered the trajectories of both Barbara Gordon and Batgirl. In 1999, in the “No Man’s Land” storyline, Batgirl returned to action as someone else finally assumed the mantle. Not long after that, Batgirl headlines her own title for the first time since her introduction.

Batman The Court of Owls Reading Order

Created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, The Court of Owls first appeared in Batman (vol. 2) #2 in 2011, at the start of the New 52 era. Previously, the Owls were not part of the DC Universe, but Snyder provided hints about the organisation in his earlier Batman work, Batman: Gates of Gotham.

The shadowy Court of Owls is an organised crime group and secret society made up of wealthy Gothamites. It has existed in Gotham City since colonial times. For a very long time, the Court was just an urban legend, until Batman discovered one of their secret base of operations. There, he found a series of old photographs of the Court’s members with one of their assassins, the Talon (William Cobb), an undead, reanimated killer. The Court kidnaps child circus performers to train and transform them into assassins known as Talons.

The Court of Owls is composed of some of Gotham City’s oldest and wealthiest families. It has controlled Gotham City for centuries, wielding political influence throughout history through murder and money. They revealed themselves to Batman when they decided to send their killer after Bruce Wayne, who had announced plans to rebuild and reshape Gotham City for the future.

Batman and Superman: A Reading Guide to DC’s Finest Team-Ups

Batman is one of the smartest superheroes in the DC Universe, while Superman is one of the most powerful. Together, they make up the World’s Finest team! 

Their friendship is one of the most enduring and iconic in comic books. These are two men with very different approaches to crime-fighting who have learned to respect and admire each other. They’ve faced many hardships, challenges, and conflicts together. While they don’t always agree and have had their share of fights, their partnership has stood the test of time and their victories and team-ups are legendary.

Batman and Superman’s relationship dates back to the Golden Age, where their Earth-Two counterparts were honorary members of the JSA, though they weren’t present in the title, too busy living many adventures in the pages of their solo titles at the time. It wasn’t until the Silver Age that their partnership truly took off, beginning with World’s Finest Comics #71 and continuing nearly uninterrupted until the series ended with issue #323.

More than 70 years later, the two heroes still work regularly together—whether it’s for a single issue, a complete storyline, a major comic book event, or as co-leads in an ongoing comic series.

Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale’s Batman Reading Order

Happy Halloween! No team in the Batman mythos is associated with this celebration more than Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale for their The Long Halloween story. Presented as a classic detective story, The Long Halloween is one of the most celebrated and influential Batman tales, featuring Tim Sale’s striking art, a good introduction to the world of Gotham, Batman’s Rogue Gallery, and an origin story for Two-Face.

For Loeb and Sale, it all started with Challengers of the Unknown (1991), their first creative collaboration that would lead to more iconic works. When editor Archie Goodwin asked artist Tim Sale in the early ’90s to work on another Legends of the Dark Knight arc after Blades (with James Robinson), Sale asked if Loeb—who was working in Hollywood at the time—could write it. This resulted in what is now known as The Haunted Knight, a collection of three Halloween-themed stories.

For Loeb, the plan was to stop there—he had another job. However, Archie Goodwin had other ideas. He asked Frank Miller about the gangsters featured in Year One, and Miller said he had no further plans for them, giving Goodwin free rein. As Loeb recalled, “Archie thought we should do something bigger with this group in mind, maybe something longer than the 80 pages of the first Halloween special. Batman Omnibus Reading Order!

Today is Batman Day! One of the most popular comic book characters, Batman needs no introduction. Since his first appearance in May 1939, the Caped Crusader has investigated crimes of various natures, ranging from murder and theft to supernatural occurrences. Originally conceived as an heir to the pulp heroes, Batman has evolved over time, gradually softening and refining into the hero we know today.

The world of Batman expanded with more team-ups, new villains and allies, and iconic stories. His adventures have been chronicled in ongoing series, annuals, miniseries, maxiseries, one-shots, graphic novels, and every other format imaginable. Over the years, DC Comics has collected many of these tales, story arcs, crossovers, and runs in various formats, including the famous Omnibus line.

With a growing collection of Omnibus editions dedicated to Batman (and his extended family), we have decided to create a specific Batman Omnibus Reading Order. This guide can serve as a roadmap to explore the world of the Dark Knight, helping both new and seasoned readers discover more about the World’s Greatest Detective!

Batman Dawn of DC Reading Order

Following the 2022 crossover events Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths and Lazarus Planet, DC Comics ended its publishing initiative known as the Infinite Frontier to launch the Dawn of DC line. Introduced as a yearlong storytelling initiative, it became another era of the DC Universe with its relaunches and crossover events.

As with Infinite Frontier, new creative teams had already taken over the main Batman series before the new ‘era’ began, and they continued to tell their story without much interruption. The Dark Knight continues his adventures in the main Batman comics by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez, Detective Comics by Ram V and Rafael Albuquerque (and others), Batman/Superman: World’s Finest by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, but also in new volumes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold by Tom King, and Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson and Simone di Meo.

The Dawn of DC era developed an overarching narrative that focused on Amanda Waller’s last nefarious plan. Also, the Justice League didn’t reform following the events of the Dark Crisis. Overall, Batman is not at the center of the big story but still has plenty to do.

Of course, as is always the case, the following guide is mostly about Batman, but the Bat-Family is also featured. Nevertheless, their books are not necessarily included.
