Star Wars: The High Republic, The Complete Reading Order

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… “ruled the glorious Republic protected by the noble and wise Jedi Knights. As a symbol of all that is good, the Republic is about to launch Starlight Beacon into the far reaches of the Outer Rim. This new space station will serve as a ray of hope for all to see. But just as a magnificent renaissance spreads throughout the Republic, so does a frightening new adversary. Now the guardians of peace and justice must face a threat to themselves, the galaxy, and the Force itself…”

And so began Star Wars: The High Republic, the most ambitious publishing initiative in Star Wars history to date. Between 2021 and 2025, 25 novels, 139 comic book issues, 22 short stories, six original manga graphic novels, and five audio originals were published. Together, they tell one cohesive story set in the High Republic Era, two centuries before the events of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Cavan Scott, Claudia Gray, Charles Soule, Daniel José Older and Justina Ireland were the five original architects of this ‘mega-story’, although many other writers and artists also contributed to these adventures.

Today, we set off on an epic journey to take a closer look at the High Republic era with our Massive High Republic Reading Order, which is filled with books, comics, audiobooks, short stories, and even some television series!

The High Republic Reading Order

The High Republic era spanned approximately 500 to 100 BBY. Although this period has been at the centre of the publishing initiative, a few stories have already been added to the era, with more to come, expanding and exploring this bright period for Jedi activity in the galaxy.

Star Wars: The High Republic Phase I: Light of the Jedi

Set around 232 BBY-229 BBY in the Star Wars Universe. From Jedi Masters Avar Kriss to Elzar Mann or Porter Engle, meet the new Jedi characters who defend the Galactic Republic and must face new threats such as The Nihil, a group of marauders who plagued the Outer Rim Territories, during a period of expansion.

Phase I, set 200 years before the Skywalker saga, was released between January 2021 and March 2022 in our galaxy.

Star Wars: The High Republic Phase II: Quest of The Jedi

Set between 500 and 382 BBY in the Star Wars Universe, Phase II is a prequel story that takes place 150 years before the events of Phase I. For the best experience, we recommend reading the phases in release order, at least the first time, as the story has been built up that way. There is a lot of foreshadowing and cross-referencing.

At a time of great exploration, in an effort to unite the galaxy, “the Chancellors of the Republic, working alongside the courageous Jedi Knights, have dispatched dozens of Pathfinder teams into the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim. But it is also a time of great uncertainty. Communication is unreliable, and tall tales of mysterious planets and monstrous creatures abound. Prospectors and pirates roam the frontier, and the worlds of Eiram and E’ronoh are locked in a forever war. And on the far-off planet of Dalna, a new threat to the galaxy is beginning to emerge…”

Phase II was released between October 2022 and June 2023 in our galaxy.

Interlude: Between Phase I and II

There’s a 150-year gap between Phase I and Phase II (382-232 BBY)! This period has not been officially covered in the multimedia Star Wars publishing project, although a few stories have already been set during this time. Currently, most of these are geared towards preschoolers with the Young Jedi Adventures series, but this will soon change with the upcoming release of the Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Pathfinders comic series, written by George Mann.

    7 episodes set between 232 BBY and 230 BBY.

Star Wars: The High Republic Phase III: Trials of the Jedi

Set between 229 BBY and 220 BBY in the Star Wars Universe, Phase III starts one year after the events of Phase I: Light of the Jedi and sees the Jedi fighting against powerful new foes as the Galactic Republic experiences a chaotic time in the galaxy.

It is now “a time of great turmoil. The Nihil have established an Occlusion Zone in the Outer Rim, stranding hundreds of worlds behind their Stormwall. Communications are blocked, and ships that enter are lost to the void or destroyed by the Nihil. The Republic is helpless against this sinister threat, and the brave and wise Jedi Knights remain fearful of Ro’s fabled Nameless creatures, which the Jedi have learned are very real, and very deadly….”

Phase III was released between November 2023 and July 2025 in our galaxy.

After Phase III: The Acolyte

The High Republic age came to an end more than a hundred years after Phase III. The Reign of the Nihil would have mostly succeeded in creating doubt, and by 132 BBY, the High Republic was fading with the emergence of the dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic Era. This period has not yet been fully explored, although the Acolyte has started to shed light on those events.
