The Avengers Reading Order, A Post Secret Wars Marvel World (2015-Present)

Avengers Assemble! To face threats too big for one hero to combat, the Avengers were created to form Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. As villains, danger, and destruction of worlds multiplied, the number of recruits for the Avengers expanded too, with spin-offs of the team to cover more threats and to deliver more stories!

The Marvel Universe was destroyed and recreated almost ten years ago in the 2015 Secret Wars. An All-New, All-Different Marvel emerged, combining the 616 Universe and the 1610 Ultimate Universe (the home of Miles Morales). Following this event, a new Marvel era started with a new team of Avengers formed by Iron Man, the first roster of many more to come in the following years as tradition would like. In Avengers and their many spin-offs, members come and go to protect the Earth.

Today, we are exploring the world of the Avengers in a Post Secret Wars, from 2015 to the present under the creative team of Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa. If you want to dive into classic and older Avengers Comics, you can find the listing over here.

All-New, All-Different Avengers (2015-2018)

Note: Most of this reading order was previously listed in our Avengers Reading Order (now Part 1). For technical reasons, to make it more easy to navigate, and as the story continues, we chose to create a second part! Some information and a few missing titles have been added to the list, as well as the most recent releases!

Also, you’ll sometimes notice that some titles are not in bold, which are really the most optional readings! It doesn’t mean you need to read everything in bold! As always, use this reading order wisely to follow your favorite teams, characters, or writers as you wish!

In the wake of Secret Wars, the old order changed and new teams were assembled! An All-New, All-Different Avengers team was created by writer Mark Waid, with artwork by Mahmud Asrar and Adam Kubert, built with many legacy heroes. Around Iron Man and Sam as Captain America (the only two characters present in the previous roster) were assembled the Vision, Nova (Sam Alexander), Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Captain America (Sam Wilson), and Thor (Jane Foster).

At the same time, Bobby DaCosta (Sunspot) leads the Avengers Idea Mechanics, a super-scientific global rescue squad, in the New Avengers Vol. 4 by Al Ewing and Gerardo Sandoval while the all-female Avengers team A-Force reemerged under She-Hulk and Medusa’s leadership.

There are always more threats coming in the Marvel Universe, and with it more Avengers teams! Al Ewing also took charge of The Ultimates, a special team dealing with cosmic-related issues (the name coming from the Avengers version of the Ultimate Universe but the comparison stops here). Coming from Gerry Duggan and Ryan Stegman, the Avengers Unity Squad – which is a team of interconnected superhero team that was first created after Avengers Vs. X-Men, are now helping humankind, mutants, and Inhumans in a new volume of Uncanny Avengers.

Avengers: Standoff! Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson find themselves in a standoff with high and very personal stakes. And this tense conflict quickly escalates out of control, drawing in several Avengers teams! But it all begins in the small town of Pleasant Hill, an idyllic community with friendly neighbors…and a terrible, dark secret.

Civil War 2! When a new Inhuman emerges, with the ability to profile the future, Captain Marvel wants him to work with the Ultimates to preemptively tackle disasters before they happen, but Iron Man opposes the idea, suggesting it is dangerous to take his visions for granted for several reasons. See our the Civil War II Guide for an issue by issue reading order list.

Avengers in All-New Marvel Now! (2016)

Following Civil War II, Marvel Now (the branding for the relaunch preceding ANAD) made his return to, if you believe Editor Tom Brevoort, “refresh and revitalize” the titles. We’re still in the All-New, All-Different era, though people at Marvel reintroduced the Marvel Now branding to define the post Civil War II universe and the launch of new series!

This was the perfect occasion for creating more Avengers teams! All-New Avengers was split into Avengers by Mark Waid and Mike del Mundo (Captain America, Thor, The Vision, The Wasp, Spider-Man, and Hercules) and Champions (a new series following the young heroes of the Marvel Universe), and New Avengers was split into U.S.Avengers by Al Ewing and Paco Medina (Citizen V, Red Hulk, Squirrel Girl, Cannonball, Iron Patriot, and Enigma) and Occupy Avengers by David Walker and Carlos Pacheco (mostly Hawkeye traveling the country to help the underprivileged).

In that conjecture, The Great Lakes Avengers aka “everybody’s least favorite super-hero team” also make their comebacks for a short run by Zac Gorman and Will Robson.

Secret Empire! Captain America is living a lie! The Cosmic Cube has remade him into a secret true believer in the cause of Hydra! Now, Steve Rogers makes Hydra’s ideals a reality—and changes the landscape of the world dramatically! For a more detailed order issue by issue, go to the Secret Empire Reading Order.

Marvel Legacy Avengers (2017-2018)

Once again, the conclusion of an event led us into a sort of new relaunch! The Marvel Legacy Initiative was described as a greater focus on Marvel’s core superheroes and also brought back the original numbering. This lasted less than a year. Mark Waid (with artist Jesús Saiz) was still writing The Avengers that were merged into one weekly series. That period didn’t last long.

Fresh Start: Jason Aaron’s Avengers (2018-2023)

Already working on his Thor run, Jason Aaron teamed up with artist Ed McGuinness to take over The Avengers as part of Marvel’s “Fresh Start” relaunch. Their team is composed of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, She-Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes).

A new incarnation of the West Coast Avengers was introduced (in the continuity of the previous Hawkeye: Kate Bishop title). Written by Kelly Thompson, the title assembles a team consisting of the first Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, Gwenpool, America Chavez, Quentin Quire, and Kate’s boyfriend Johnny. Also, Savage Avengers created by Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato Jr. introduced a new team with Conan the Barbarian, Wolverine, the Punisher, Venom, Elektra, and Doctor Voodoo.

The War of Realms! is here, for the details. Malekith the Accursed has been conquering the Ten Realms one by one until there is only one left: Midgard (Earth!). With a lot of Asgardian warriors and Earth’s heroes, they must now fight against a full-on invasion and defeat Malekith. Consult our guide for the issue by issue order for War of The Realms.

King in Black! Knull, god of the symbiotes, is finally coming to conquer Earth—with an army of thousands of symbiote dragons at his beck and call. Of course, Earth’s heroes will fight back. For more information, go to the full reading order.

Heroes Reborn 2021! The Marvel Universe was altered so that the Avengers were never formed. Tony Stark never built an Iron Man armor. Thor is a hard-drinking atheist who despises hammers. Wakanda is dismissed as a myth. And Captain America was never found in the ice. So who is the biggest superhero team of this altered Marvel Universe? The Squadron Supreme of America. For more information, go to the full reading order.

All of the Savage Avengers issues by Gerry Duggan are now collected in one omnibus:

  • Savage Avengers by Gerry Duggan Omnibus
Collects Savage Avengers (2019) #0-28 and Annual #1, Uncanny X-Men (1981) #190-191 And Material From Free Comic Book Day 2019 (Avengers/Savage Avengers).

Spinning from the events of Avengers #50 (or #750 in legacy number) is Avengers Forever, also from Jason Aaron, focusing on Ghost Rider on a quest for cosmic vengeance! The first four issues form a story. After that, this goes more on an episodic adventure before Avengers Assemble, so you can read the first two trades together.

During the last few years, a few limited Avengers series set in alternate universes were released. For a little detour before entering a new run, you can check out:

The Avengers by Jed MacKay (2023-Present)

In 2023, picking up after Jason Aaron’s run, Jed MacKay and artist C.F. Villa relaunched the Avengers. This time, it’s Captain Marvel who assembled a new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, with once again Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Thor, Iron Man, and Black Panther joining her on her mission to fight the battles no one else can.

Vampire Logo Reading OrderThe skies have gone dark, the sun hiding its face from the carnage to come. The children of the night, the vampires, have risen from the dark and hidden places of the world as one to drown the Marvel Universe in blood. The Avengers and many other Marvel Superheroes are fighting in a war of a new kind against the creatures of the night. Check out our guide for Blood Hunt for a complete checklist!

  1. King in Black has got to be one of my favorite events that i have ever read. Also i have been meaning to ask if there will be a reading order regarding the Ultimate Marvel Universe Post-Secret Wars too because i would really like to know what happened to The Maker or Wolverine’s son after that event in the main continuity since i have only read Cates’s Venom run. (i have been following the UM reading order so far and have been enjoying that universe a lot). Thanks again for making the best reading orders ever : D

    1. Hey Atanas,

Following you comment, I thought a little bit about the idea of having a guide for the Ultimate Marvel Post Secret Wars, and something could be done about informing where to find the characters who came to Earth 616. I also entertained the idea of making an article about the Maker, so reading your comment remembered me of that. I will make a little bit more research and see what can be done on that subject, thank you for those suggestions!

And thank you for reading us!
