Jennifer Blood Reading Order

Created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Adriano Batista, Jennifer Blood is a vigilante character who made her debut in her own comic book series published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2011.

Her story will sound slightly familiar to fans of Ennis’s work, as she may be described as the female suburban version of The Punisher (the first issue is even titled “War Journal“). Jessica Blute is the daughter of Sam and Jennifer Blute, members of the violent Blute family. Betrayed by his brothers (Jimmy, Michael, Nicholas, Pete, and Steve), who thought his marriage softened him, Sam was murdered. Pete decided to take care of Jennifer, who learned what really happened to Sam and revealed it through letters to her daughter, who was then at boarding school. After Jennifer took her own life, Jessica disappeared, faking her death during Spring Break.

As Jenny Bell, she spent years training in combat, weapons, espionage, and forgery, preparing to avenge her parents. In college, she met Andrew Fellows, married him, and had two children. Though nearly ready to abandon her mission, the Blutes’ repeated escapes from prosecution pushed her to create her vigilante persona, Jennifer Blood, to go after her uncles one by one. But that’s only the beginning for Jennifer’s bloody journey…

Jennifer Blood Comics Reading Order

Before taking a closer look at the original run of the Jennifer Blood comics, there’s one omnibus available collecting Garth Ennis and Al Ewing’s comics, the first 24 issues.

Garth Ennis’ Original Run

Garth Ennis wrote the first six issues of the original Jennifer Blood comic book series, with Kewber Baal as the main artist. Jessica systematically eliminates her crime-lord uncles, exposing the internal corruption of her family and revealing how far she is willing to go to avenge her past.

Al Ewing’s Jennifer Blood Comics

After Garth Ennis left the book, writer Al Ewing took over with Kewber Baal staying as the main artist up to the end of the run. The series shifts to the aftermath of her revenge. Authorities and criminals begin closing in, forcing Jennifer to confront the repercussions of her double life.

But first, Al Ewing wrote a spin-off miniseries about the origins of the Ninjettes, setting up a kind of comeback of the “brand”.

Written by Michael Carroll, Jennifer Blood: First Blood is a prequel miniseries coming back at Jessica’s “lost years,” a look at what turned her into a killing machine.

Michael Carroll’s Blood Legacy

After that point, Al Ewing only wrote two more issues. Michael Carroll picked up the writing duties, taking the original adventures of Jennifer Blood to their conclusion with issue #36.

Jennifer Blood joins Dynamite’s Extended Universe

The original Jennifer Blood comics concluded in 2014. The following year, she resurfaced in Dynamite’s crossover event, Gail Simone’s Sword of Sorrows. Presented as the ultimate pulp adventure, this 21-issue event was female-centric. Jennifer was next to Vampirella, Dejah Thoris, Red Sonja, Purgatori, Lady Demon, Chastity, Jungle Girl, Kato, Lady Zorro, Irene Adler, and more.

  • Swords Of Sorrow: The Complete Saga
Collects Swords of Sorrow #1-6, Chaos! Prelude one-shot, Vampirella & Jennifer Blood #1-4, Masquerade & Kato one-shot, Dejah Thoris & Irene Adler #1-3, Black Sparrow & Lady Zorro one-shot, Red Sonja & Jungle Girl #1-3, Pantha & Jane Porter one-shot, Miss Fury & Lady Rawhide one-shot.

Jennifer Blood’s Short-Lived Return

Jennifer Blood didn’t stay away for long. Writer Steven Grant took over for the Born Again miniseries, with art still by Kewber Baal. After a period of hiding, Jennifer Blood comes back into the picture. During her absence, someone has assumed her identity and launched a brutal campaign across Los Angeles’s criminal underworld.

Fred Van Lente’s Jennifer Blood Relaunch

In 2021, Dynamite used the big crossover DIE!namite Lives written by Fred Van Lente with artist Vincenzo Carratù to bring back Jennifer Blood in a bombastic manner. Following that, Van Lente and artist Vincenzo Federici launched a new Jennifer Blood series. She resurfaced in the town of Bountiful, Utah, which is full of mobsters living a peaceful life until blood starts spilling.

The Ninjettes are back, but Fred Van Lente and artist Joe Cooper organised a Battle Royale-type of story to select the new Ninjettes, only three will survive.
