Plants vs. Zombies Comics in Order (Dark Horse Comics)

Created by PopCap Games, the original Plants vs. Zombies launched in 2009 as a tower-defense game in which players defend a suburban home from an increasingly ridiculous army of zombies by planting an arsenal of weaponized plants. What began as a simple strategy game quickly became one of PopCap’s signature franchises, expanding into other media, including comic books!

The zombies want your brains, and the plants are standing between them and the front door. Its world is filled with cartoonish characters, bizarre inventions, puns, and a constant clash between the mundane and the ridiculous. At its center is the eccentric inventor Crazy Dave, whose bizarre behavior hides a surprising amount of ingenuity. His plants are humanity’s first line of defense against Dr. Zomboss, the self-proclaimed genius behind the zombie hordes. Across the games, the simple suburban conflict has expanded into time travel, new eras and locations, new varieties of plants and zombies, and eventually entirely different styles of gameplay, including the Garden Warfare shooters and Plants vs. Zombies Heroes.

Published by Dark Horse Comics, the Plants vs. Zombies comic series began in 2013 with Lawnmageddon, written by Paul Tobin and illustrated by Ron Chan. Rather than adapting the original game level by level, Tobin and Chan created an original story set within the familiar Plants vs. Zombies world. The comic introduces two young protagonists, Patrice Blazing and Nate Timely, who become caught up in the battle between Crazy Dave’s plants and Dr. Zomboss’s zombies. Patrice is Crazy Dave’s niece, while Nate becomes the neighborhood’s unlikely young hero. That’s the graphic novel adventures we are getting into now with this reading order of the Dark Horse Plants vs. Zombies comics!

A Guide to Reading Plants vs. Zombies Comics in Order

The first Plants vs. Zombies game was released in 2009, and by 2013 the property was expanding rapidly: Plants vs. Zombies 2 was arriving, PvZ Adventures had just launched, and Garden Warfare was being developed. Dark Horse was already interested in turning the property into publishing material. Dark Horse editor Philip Simon recruited fans of the games, writer Paul Tobin and artist Ron Chan, who got free rein to expand the universe of the franchise as they saw fit.

Are the Plants vs. Zombies Comics Canon?

Officially, the Plants vs. Zombies comics are licensed by PopCap and Electronic Arts and freely incorporate characters, plants, zombies, locations, and concepts from the games, but they were created as original stories, not as direct adaptations of the game’s events. It would be more accurate to view them as an official parallel continuity within the larger Plants vs. Zombies franchise than as a strict continuation of game canon. However, there are connections, as creations from the comics were eventually introduced in the games (like the character of Patrice Blazing, who made her videogame debut in Plants vs. Zombies 3). Overall, I would call them “semi-canon.”

The Zomnibus Collection

Before taking a more detailed look at the full series, graphic novel by graphic novel, let’s focus on the Zomnibus Collection. Those are Dark Horse omnibuses, meaning they are 250-page hardcover reprinting of three volumes each, not massive volumes. The first two came out in 2021 and 2022, then the collection stopped, but since late 2025, they started coming out fast.

The Plants vs. Zombies Graphic Novel Collection

It all began with Plants vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon. This first Dark Horse Plants vs. Zombies comic introduces young heroes Patrice Blazing and Nate Timely as they join Crazy Dave in defending their neighborhood from Dr. Zomboss and his zombie army. Originally released digitally in 2013 before being collected in print. Timepocalypse followed in 2014, beginning digitally before its collection as the second graphic novel.

Following the success of the first two graphic novels, Dark Horse expanded Plants vs. Zombies into an ongoing monthly comic series in 2015. While still published digitally, the comics were now available in print before being collected. The monthly series began with Bully for You, continuing the adventures of Patrice, Nate, Crazy Dave, and their ever-growing cast of allies and enemies. Ron Chan is the artist on the first and third storylines, but Andie Tong and Jacob Chabot joined the creative team as pencillers, respectively on the second and fourth.

  1. Plants vs. Zombies: Bully For You

With Plants vs. Zombies: Battle Extravagonzo, the series entered a new phase of its publishing history, moving away from the earlier monthly comic format toward original graphic novels released directly in book form. Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare

Published in 2015, the three-issue miniseries serves as a bridge between the Garden Warfare games, expanding on the events of the first game and setting the stage for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. Paul Tobin returned as writer, joined by artist Jacob Chabot, as the plants and zombies face a new conflict that leads directly into the sequel.

In 2018, a second volume of this spin-off series was published. Adopting the graphic novel format, it continues the story, with Tim Lattie taking over the art. It was originally presented as a bridge between PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 and PvZ: Garden Warfare 3, but the third game never came and, in fact, any trace of it in the presentation of the book was quickly erased. Those books continued to expand upon the events and world established by Garden Warfare 2.
