Rick and Morty Comics Reading Order (the comics spin-off by Oni Press)

Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!!! The crazy world created by Dan Harmon & Justin Roiland in their hit Adult Swim animated show Rick & Morty goes beyond the screen and into the comic book world!

Published by Oni Press, the Rick & Morty comic book series expands the universe of the super scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty—but also his teenage granddaughter Summer, his veterinary surgeon daughter Beth, and his hapless son-in-law Jerry—with a lot of as insane adventures.

What to read before Rick and Morty’s comics?

Reading is not right, watching is more appropriate. Even if you can read the comics without knowing much about the show, you’ll miss a lot. I recommend watching at least the first 2/3 seasons of Rick & Morty before picking up those books. Especially before the third book of the first volume, when the comics became canon (the first two volumes are inconsequential).

I. The Main Rick and Morty Series in Order

Rick and Morty, the new Compendium edition

Let’s start by pointing out the new Compendium edition, a +300 page softcover edition at a good price. More Volumes coming soon, we can imagine!

The Rick and Morty paperback editions

Originally, the first volume of Rick and Morty comics was simply collected in trade paperbacks. After that, came the Deluxe editions (see below) and the compendium (see above).

The first volume of the Rick and Morty comic book series ended here. After that, the stories took the form of miniseries and one-shots. But in 2023, Oni Press launched a new ongoing series. To learn more about it, see at the end of this article.

IV. Rick and Morty Vs Dungeons & Dragons

The universe of Rick and Morty meets the magic world of Dungeons & Dragons in two mini-series. When Morty sees a cute girl at school playing Dungeons & Dragons, he asks Rick to show him the ropes, only to discover that his grandfather is a veteran gamer. The next thing he knows, the entire family has been pulled into a campaign that escalates from virtual D&D simulations to alternate universes governed by the rules of the game.
