As you are well aware now, not all Spider-Men are Peter Parker under the mask. And one of the coolest versions is Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man 2099, who couldn’t be more different from Peter even if he tried!
Created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi for the Marvel 2099 comic book line, Miguel O’Hara made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #365 in August 1992, as a preview, before headlining his own series, Spider-Man 2099, which launched in November of that year. Readers were introduced to the brilliant Irish-Mexican geneticist Miguel O’Hara, who lives in Nueva York (a renamed New York City) in the year 2099 and works for Alchemax, one of North America’s biggest corporations, which produces everything from everyday products to military weaponry and private space travel.
Miguel was being pressured and manipulated by his boss Tyler Stone for testing a process to imprint genetic codes into human physiology. Miguel had to experiment on himself if he wanted a future, but things didn’t turn out as expected: his DNA was rewritten and became fifty percent spider.
With great power comes great responsibility, and Miguel decided to use his new abilities to take down Tyler Stone and Alchemax. Miguel became Spider-Man 2099, the breakout star of the Marvel 2099 line. He has naturally appeared in numerous media adaptations, including in the animated Across the Spider-Verse movie, voiced by Oscar Isaac – although I think this is a bad version of the character, as his core values are not respected!
Find out everything you need to know about Miguel O’Hara and his complicated timeline in our Complete Spider-Man 2099 reading order!
Spider-Man 2099 Reading Order
There are three distinct eras of Spider-Man 2099: the cult-classic stories from the 1990s, the character’s revival in the 2010s, and the current version. Follow our guide to explore the complex continuity of Miguel O’Hara (and his different versions):
- The Cult Era by Peter David (1991-1996, 2024) [Must Read]

Spider-Man 2099 Volume 1: The Cult Era by Peter David (1991-1996, 2024)
As said above, Spider-Man 2099 made his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #365, a super-sized 30th-anniversary issue containing a five-page preview of Spider-Man 2099. Part of the Marvel 2099 imprint, Spider-Man 2099 volume 1 will last 46 issues, with Peter David as the sole writer during 44 issues and Rick Leonardi as penciler during most of the first 25 issues.
This comic was originally reprinted in a collection of now out-of-print trade paperbacks (but available in digital format). Fortunately, Marvel has released an Omnibus reprinting material from Marvel 2099, including the Spider-Man 2099 comic.

The nineties were a turbulent time for the comic book industry, and this had an impact on the 2099 line. Editor Joey Cavalieri was fired in 1996, and many of the 2099 creators, including Peter David quit in protest. The line simply didn’t survive long after that.
Peter David’s first run on the character came to an end with issue #44. The final two issues of Spider-Man 2099 were produced without his involvement, and the series concluded with issue #46. In 2024, 28 years later, David came back to the techno-dystopian future of 2099 with a new limited series featuring the Venom of 2099. The story takes place after the end of his run on Spider-Man at issue #44.
- Symbiote Spider-Man 2099
Collects Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 (2023) #1-5. Also reprinted in Symbiote Spider-Man By Peter David Omnibus.
A few months after the cancellation, Marvel launched World of Tomorrow, a comic book series that continued the incomplete storylines. The series was written by Joe Kelly and Ben Raab, with multiple artists. Those 8 issues were followed by a one-shot, leading us to the official end of the 2099 line, but also giving us a conclusion to Miguel O’Hara’s story — before Marvel messed up everything with some time-traveling shenanigans.
- 2099 World of Tomorrow #1-8
Uncollected. - 2099 Manifest Destiny
Uncollected one-shot.

Interlude: The Variants of Miguel O’Hara (2006-2009)
This section is optional. Like every Marvel character or so, there are other versions of Miguel O’Hara. Maybe you have met the fun Piguel O’Malley, the animal version of Spider-Man 2099 (Spider-Gwen once rode on his back in Web Warriors!).
Writer Tony Bedard and artist Jim Calafiore introduced a new version of Miguel in Exiles, the famous time and space traveling team. This Miguel O’Hara is from Earth-6375 and has a similar history as his most famous counterpart, until the arrival of the Net-Prophet (also known as Justice) in 2099 A.D. This version of the character is possessed by Proteus. Spider-Man 2099 meets The Exiles in issue #75 and becomes a regular member until issue #99.
- Exiles Ultimate Collection – Book 5
Collects Exiles #75-89, Exiles Annual #1 - Exiles Ultimate Collection – Book 6
Collects Exiles #90-100, Days Of Then & Now; X-Men: Die By The Sword #1-5
Meet another variant of Miguel O’Hara! In 2009, Marvel decided to revisit a little bit of the 2099 concept with the Timestorm 2009/2099 limited series from Brian Reed and Eric Battle. It reimagined the 2099 timeline at a moment where Marvel heroes of 2009 found themselves caught in a time crisis, known as Earth-96099 or Earth-TRN129. While the universe is similar to the original 2099, there are notable differences, such as Spider-Man being a teenager.
- Timestorm 2009 / 2099
Collects: Timestorm 2009/2099 #1-4, Spider-Man One-Shot, And X-Men One-Shot
Those two variants of the character reappeared during the Spider-Verse event, in Spider-Man 2099 Vol. 2 #5 (see below!)

All-New Spider-Man 2099 (2014-2019)
It’s been almost 20 years since the original Spider-Man 2099 appeared in the Marvel Universe. A fact that Dan Slott, as a fan of the character, was determined to change. He reintroduced Miguel O’Hara in the Spider-Universe during his time on Superior Spider-Man, and without almost missing a beat continuity-wise. Then, classic Spider-Man 2099 writer Peter David came back to the character to write his solo adventures for the next two volumes!
But how did Miguel came back in the Marvel Universe? The 2099 Universe was changed forever in the aftermath of the Age of Ultron event. Time became irreparably broken, and no more alternate timelines emerged. Any changes to the timeline created ripple effects that altered the past, present, and future. Writers Dan Slott and Peter David explored the consequences of such a dramatic event on the world of 2099 and on Miguel’s life, in Superior Spider-Man and a new Spider-Man 2099 ongoing series.
During this time, they firmly established the 2099 Universe as the future of the Marvel Universe and followed Miguel as he travelled back in time to the present-day Marvel Universe to prevent the future from being altered. All those stories can be found in:

- Captain Marvel vol. 4 #27–30 was released in 2002 and is collected in Spider-Man 2099 Omnibus Volume 2 but takes place during the first era, after Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man.

Spider-Verse Event! This is one of the most important events in Spider-Man’s history. Or should I say in Spider-Man’s history! Written by Dan Slott, Spider-Verse is a Spider-Fest, as this event is full of Spider-People, bringing back old and improbable versions of the characters… and killing a lot of them, too! The Inheritors are exterminating spider-characters throughout the multiverse. Miguel naturally joins the Spider-People to fight their enemies.
Different versions of Miguel O’Hara make an appearance during that event, including the ones from Earth-96099 and Earth-6375 (in the Spider-Man 2099 title). You can check out our Complete Spider-Man Spider-Verse event guide if you want the full experience.
